Bestiary & Taming
The Bestiary is the hero's book of every creature he has slain. It is the first prize of the Arena: the hero receives it with his first Arena victory, and from then on it counts kills in the Arena and in every other battle he fights, up to 1000 kills per creature. Troops are not recorded. Each threshold reached adds to what the hero knows and how well he fights that creature:
| Kills | Reward |
|---|---|
| 1 | name, level, size |
| 10 | AC, HP, Speed |
| 20 | saves and attacks |
| 40 | weaknesses and resistances |
| 80 | +1 to attacks and saves against it |
| 160 | +1 damage against it, +1 AC when it attacks you |
| 320 | Tameable (below half HP): normal stats, 2% colour variant |
| 490 | Trained tames: + half the Elite HP, 4% colour variant |
| 660 | Hardened tames: that HP, +1 AC, attacks, saves, Perception, 7% colour variant |
| 830 | Prime tames: full Elite HP, +1 to everything, +1 damage, 10% colour variant |
| 1000 | Paragon tames: the full Elite template (+1 level, +2 to everything, Elite HP), 15% colour variant |
The bonuses add up: at 160 kills the hero has +1 to attacks and saves against that creature, +1 damage against it and +1 AC when it attacks him.
Taming
With 320 kills of a tameable creature, the hero may tame it in battle once it drops below half its HP, if it is not above his level. A Tame window shows the creature, its colour and the tier it will have; taming always succeeds. The tier reached at that moment stays with the pet for good:
| Tier | HP | Colour variant chance |
|---|---|---|
| Tameable | normal | 2% |
| Trained | half the Elite HP increase | 4% |
| Hardened | half the Elite HP increase | 7% |
| Prime | full Elite HP increase | 10% |
| Paragon | full Elite HP increase | 15% |
Hardened pets also gain +1 AC, attacks, saves and Perception; Prime pets +1 to everything and +1 damage; Paragon pets +1 level and +2 to everything. The Elite HP increase is +10 at level 1 or lower, +15 at 2–4, +20 at 5–19 and +30 at 20 and up. A colour variant is one of 11 colours for the creature's family; one variant in a hundred is a rare Albino (the Dracolich's rare colour is Soulfire). True dragons come in the nine dragon colours.
Tamed creatures go to the Pet Sanctuary, which holds 25 pets with no upkeep, or to town stock. From the Sanctuary a pet can be made active, ridden as a mount, or lent to a companion at the Guild Hall.
