Materials & Grades

How the material an item is made from, and the skill of its maker, change it.

Precious materials

Precious gear is made from Adamantine, Orichalcum, Magesteel, Darkwood or Dragonhide. It is always high grade:

WeaponsArmour
Price13,500 gold + 1,350 per Bulk (Orichalcum 22,500 + 2,250)32,000 gold + 3,200 per Bulk (Orichalcum 55,000 + 5,500)
Item level17 (Orichalcum 18)19 (Orichalcum 20)

Darkwood and Magesteel are 1 Bulk lighter; armour made from them needs 2 less Strength and slows by 5 ft less.

Precious metal gear is forged at the Legendary Smith; Darkwood at the Woodworker and Bowyer; Dragonhide at the Leatherworker (Grade II dragonhide needs building level 12 and an Adamantine tool; see Dragonhide Gear). Every recipe takes half the price in the raw material and the other half in Gold. Dragonhide uses a set number of Dragonscale per piece instead (see Dragonhide Gear), with Gold making up the rest of half the price.

Grades of craftsmanship

GradeBonusHow
Standard—All town-made gear
Master+1Crafted by a hero at Master skill level
Legendary+2Crafted by a hero at Legendary skill level

The grade is a Quality bonus. For AC, each worn piece (armour, helmet, bracers and a working shield) adds its own Quality bonus, and Quality bonuses all stack; on a weapon it adds to attack rolls. Runes are added at the Spellsmith (see Weapon Runes and Armor Runes).
